PRACTICE 1
Data, MDM & Automation
The foundation for clearer decisions and better operations.
DATA, MDM & AUTOMATION
Make your data work for the decision.
When systems disagree about an item, a unit or a promise date, the problem reaches buyers, planners, operators and customers. We trace the decision back to its records, fix what can be proved, and build the controls that keep the correction usable.
The data is the starting point, not the finish line.

A cleaner record matters when it changes the work people do—and when the operating and financial effects can be checked.
THE FOUNDATION BEHIND THE WORK
Make the records agree. Change the daily decision. Verify the result.
Data work enables planning, sourcing, production and service when it gives people a dependable view of the same business fact. We begin with one decision that matters, not a promise to clean everything at once.
01 / FOLLOW THE CONSEQUENCE
A corrected field is not a financial result.
Trace what should change at each handoff, then test it with the same orders, definitions and owners.
CORRECTION
Approve pack units
One governed unit conversion
PROCESS MEASURE
Conversion errors
Errors per checked line
CUSTOMER MEASURE
Correct deliveries
Same order cohort
OPERATING MEASURE
Returns & rework
Observed after the change
FINANCIAL GATE
Avoidable cost
Count only evidenced savings
Example hypothesis adapted from the deck's KPI chain. The arrows describe effects to test, not proven client outcomes; volume, mix and process changes could also affect the result.
02 / BUILD A USABLE FOUNDATION
Clean what can be explained. Keep what cannot out of the decision.
From extraction through approval, each transformation has a reason, a test and a release condition.
01
Find the actual record
Profile source tables at their real grain. A purchase-order line, receipt line and invoice line are not the same record.
02
Make facts comparable
Keep source keys, agree item identities and translate names, units and dates into a shared contract.
03
Hold what cannot be proved
Validate rules and reconcile totals before publishing. Quarantine exceptions instead of inventing missing values.
04
Give the control an owner
Record who approves changes, when they take effect and what has to happen before downstream teams use them.
03 / GOVERN THE SHARED IDENTITY
One item can serve four kinds of work.
Master data is not a demand for every team to keep identical fields. It is an approved identity with the right views for the work.
BUY
Supplier pack and specification
PLAN
Lead time and minimum lot
GOVERNED IDENTITY
Item 0012
12 each / case · steward owned
MAKE
Bill of materials and route
SHIP
GTIN and dimensions
Master-data model adapted from slide 10. Item 0012 is an example; changes need an owner and effective date.
04 / USE THE RECONCILED DATA
What you bought is not necessarily what you used.
Before calling a spend change a saving, reconcile receipts, usage and the stock that remains.
Worked example from Data to Performance, slide 12; not client results. The six monthly receipts sum to 700 and usage to 660. At the example's $20 per unit, 40 extra units mean $800 of inventory, not $800 of savings. Actual reconciliation also checks returns, transfers and valuation changes.
FROM DATA TO PERFORMANCE
Prove the improvement before you scale it.
Test a controlled slice with the people who use it. Check the operating measure and the cost evidence with Finance. Keep recurring earnings, working-capital cash and released capacity separate—none follows automatically from time saved.
THE TEAM
People who make the work happen.
Data and MDM practitioners, business stewards, operations specialists and delivery teams bring the records, rules and work into alignment.
01
Data & MDM practitioners
Define records, quality rules and stewardship that make information reusable.
02
Business stewards
Keep source keys, agree item identities and translate names, units and dates into a shared contract.
03
Automation & delivery support
Shape practical workflows and help teams adopt the controls behind them.
